Photographic Fixer
This is the most classic application of sodium thiosulfate. In the processing of traditional film and photographic paper, the unexposed silver halide remaining after development remains light-sensitive and would darken the image. Sodium thiosulfate reacts with these silver halides to form stable, water-soluble complexes, completely dissolving and washing them away from the photographic material. This permanently fixes the image, making it an essential chemical in darkroom processes.
Efficient Water Dechlorinator
In aquaculture, potable water treatment, and swimming pool maintenance, sodium thiosulfate is a safe and highly effective neutralizer for residual chlorine. It rapidly undergoes a redox reaction with leftover chlorine or hypochlorite in water, producing harmless products like sodium chloride, thereby instantly eliminating chlorine's toxicity. This protects chlorine-sensitive fish, microorganisms, and downstream water treatment equipment.
Medical Antidote
In clinical settings, sodium thiosulfate is one of the specific antidotes for cyanide poisoning. Its mechanism of action involves serving as a sulfur donor.
