Peroxydisulfate contains peroxide groups and functions as a strong oxidizing agent capable of oxidizing Mn²⁺ to MnO₄⁻. Ammonium persulfate is produced through electrolysis of ammonium bisulfate aqueous solutions.
S₂O₈²⁻ + 2H₂O ⇌ 2HSO₄⁻ + H₂O₂
The resulting solution contains ammonium ions, peroxydisulfate ions, hydrogen sulfate ions, and sulfate ions. The hydrolysis process creates an acidic solution, with nitric acid addition inhibiting the forward reaction.
